Re:Vision Field Data Tools

Offline field data collection for a Denver nonprofit fighting the urban food desert problem.

2013 · Completed

Re:Vision is a Denver nonprofit that works with minority women to take on the urban food desert problem — neighborhoods where fresh food simply isn't available nearby. For an ICTD lab project, my team built the tools they needed to gather community garden data out in the field, where there's often no reliable connectivity.

We deployed ODK Collect for offline data collection, wrote the documentation in both English and Spanish, and trained the local women who would actually be using it. The hard part of this kind of work is rarely the code. It's making the technology genuinely usable by the people on the ground, which meant the training and the bilingual docs mattered as much as the data pipeline.
