DentonUnderground.com

Early digital-photo community site for the Denton scene, years before social photo-sharing existed.

1999 - 2001 · Completed

DentonUnderground.com was a local community site I ran for the Denton, TX scene. The hook was simple and, for the time, novel: a few collaborators and I went out to venues and events with a digital camera, shot the crowd, and posted the photos afterward. People came back the next day to find themselves in the previous night's pictures.

Digital cameras were still new and expensive then, and the social-photo era was years off. Candid shots of yourself out on the town were a genuinely fresh draw — exactly the kind of repeat traffic that's hard to manufacture. This was well before Flickr (2004) and the whole user-generated-photo wave. One of my earliest experiments in building community around shared experience instead of just content.

I shut it down when I moved to Austin in early 2001.
