If evolution holds, we started as microorganisms. Well, perhaps you could say we started somewhere before that. Regardless, at some point in history, humans lacked a sense of awareness. Fast forward to current times, and there’s a lot of talk about being “conscious” and “awake.” Somewhere between microbes and now, the first human(s) realized what it meant to be. I’ve always wondered what that part of evolution was like.
So as we strive towards greater awareness, well some of us, I often wonder what this truly means. In much the same way an amoeba is not well equipped to grasp self-awareness, I figure we only have the capacity to be aware to a particular extent. Still, something seems to be happening – to be changing – right now. I can’t point you to a website or walk you though some form of logic to illustrate that we are in a time of rapid change. It’s just a personal conclusion drawn on my own learning, observations, and experiences. This blog post isn’t really about the current time of change. What I will talk about is “awareness” itself and where I suspect it may be going.

June is here and the snow season is all but over. Nino and I went up to the Basin two weekends ago and did a bit of slushboarding. A-Basin officially closes up shop this coming weekend. I’m not sure what’s left up there, but it won’t be much.
We talked about getting one more day in, but decided to go surfing in Mexico instead. The time on the beach and in the ocean was much needed. I was a bit disappointed that Nino didn’t try paddling into any waves; but, honestly, the waves were in the worst form I’ve seen for Sayulita. Sets were rare and sometimes consisted of a single rogue wave. I still managed to get a few rides in, so I was content. Besides, it’s blissful just to sit out in the water bobbing on a board.
I have to say, I’ve fallen off the wagon this season. I’m less healthy now than I was this time last year. I’ve gained a few pounds and I didn’t push as hard. I don’t think I progressed this season much at all either. I’m landing 180s here and there, but they’re nothing compared to my face plants. I never had the courage to try a 360. I don’t think I’m ready. I need to start cleaning up the 180s first, I think.
With a little luck, the start of next season will be less than 5 months away. I doubt I’ll sneak in a snowboarding trip this summer. I’m planning a Burning Man. Beyond that, I think I need to travel less and focus more. It’s hard though. I’m already planning another trip to Mexico. I have trouble staying still. Locational A.D.D. or something…
