First Turns Of The 08/09 Season

November 3rd, 2008

I took my first turns of the 08/09 season this last Saturday. I headed up to A-Basin with the girl and introduce her to my favorite pass time. After the warm week, there was more snow than I expected. The sun softened the pack enough to get an easy edge. For not having any fresh snow, it was just about the best learning conditions we could hope for.

Steph seems to be a quick study. On her first day she got a good feel of riding heel edge and started getting her “falling leaf” down. She tried a little toe edge, but not too much. On the milder slopes, she pointed the board straight and seemed to kind of naturally start into some carving. Overall, I think she’ll get her carving figured out by her third trip. Best of all, she did an excellent job of skating off of the lift. Her very first time, she rode off straight and pretty. The only concern was an inability to stop!

I took the old beater board (the Kemper) out for the day. I didn’t hit a single rock or stump so I think it’s ok to switch to the Burton Custom next time we go out. The sharper, longer edges will be nice on this nasty early season hard pack. It feels great to be on the snow again!

With my 36 days before moving to Colorado, plus the 56 days from last season, and the first day this season – my grand total is now 93 days of snowboarding. A mere 7 more days will push me over the 100 mark. I don’t expect this season to be nearly as active as last. If I get in a couple of dozen days, I will be content. We’ll see how it goes.
