Day 5: Opening Weekend

October 13th, 2007

Opening Weekend at A-BasinJoe, Christina, and I went up to a-basin for opening weekend. As expected, it was crap! But, of course, we had fun. There was one run with all man made snow. It was rather crowded. My board got slammed into repeatedly, but I was riding my old beater board (the Kemper) so I didn’t care. We only took a few runs before we got tired of falling on hard pack and getting run into. Still, it marks my 5th day of snowboarding this season, leaving me with 95 to go to reach my max goal. My minimum is 36 days, so I’ve got 31 left there. The minimum should be a snap. I still can’t see how I’ll make the 100, but I’m gonna keep after it.

The Season is ON!

October 10th, 2007

A-Basin Officially OpensI almost crapped my pants (figuratively). It’s still October, the MIDDLE of October, and Arapaho Basin just opened! Lucky me, I have no plans for the weekend. It’s one run and all man made, but I’ll go slide down it a little bit. Saturday and Sunday will give me 2 more days towards my count, bringing me down to 94. I planned two trips over the following two weekends. One trip is to see my family and friends back in Texas. The other is to go surfing with my dear friend Velzy in Santa Cruz. I probably should have married her by now but… anyway… Including this weekend, I have 4 free weekends between now and Thanksgiving – when I originally thought I would begin the season. That’s potentially 8 days of boarding bringing me to 86 as the “real” season begins. With this kind of luck, I might actually make my goal!

First Snows of 07/08

October 3rd, 2007

Snowbird First Snow 07/08 SeasonFolks are talking about the first snowfalls. There’s a mention on skiblog.com. There’s also a note of notice over on Highly Obsessed followed by a webcam shot of Sunshine Village. And, of course, we’re talking about it a bit on DallasSnowboarders.com here and here. It also appears that Steamboat is getting it’s first bit of dust. It all makes me anxious like a little kid before Christmas. The only catch is, I don’t have a plan. I have my 5 mountain pass, but I have no near-mountain lodging figured out. I also don’t have any kind of pass for Winter Park nor Steamboat – both places I’d like to ride. I guess it’s time to get cracking!
