Virb : What myspace should have been.

July 5th, 2007

I kept hearing about this new site called Virb but never remembered to check it out while I was at my computer. I’ve been on Virb for all of about 20 minutes and, I must say, I am overwhelmed. This site is clean, easy to use, and just plain sexy. The little light bulb to dim the page while watching a video is brilliant. The use of Ajax is excellent – it makes the site more functional in nice subtle ways. Profile modification is easy and fun. Virb is social network community done right. I’m obviously way behind on this one because my initial searches for profiles yielded massive results. To all the other social networking websites out there – the bar is now higher! I am curious what the technology is. Netcraft says they’re running CentOS and Apache 2. My first guess would be Ruby on Rails. My second would be Django and Python. Here’s a bit-o-press coverage. I’m off to go dig around on the site some more.

Bearfire Promo Video

July 4th, 2007

This video was recently posted to the official Bearfire website. I couldn’t watch it on my laptop running Ubuntu and the quicktime link was broken so it was a while before I finally got to see it. I took the liberty of up’n the video to YouTube so the whole world could watch. I like how they slipped in a few live video shots of real boarders in the mountains – at least they could have slipped in snowflex shots… heh.. Still, it’s nice to see the new media. Enjoy!

100 Days of Boarding

I’ve been challenged, so to speak. I was discussing my move to Colorado on SnowboardAddicts and a poster said, “It isn’t a full season unless you ride over 100 days…” That sounds like enough of a challenge to me. It’s going to be extremely difficult to pull off with a full time job in Broomfield, but I’m going to shoot for 100 days of riding this season.

While it sounds impressive to say that I’ve been snowboarding since 2001, I haven’t actually had many riding days. I just did the tally and I’ve been riding a grand total of 36 days. That’s just over a third of a season, according to the fellow quoted above. I’ve decided that I am going to set this as my low. I absolutely can not, under any circumstances, ride for less than 36 days this season. Riding 36 days will be equivalent of finishing the race, but coming in last place.

The real question is, do I count my days in Chile? Our season hasn’t really started yet – so it would be pre-season… So honestly, it’s a tad unfair to count them. However, last season is over and hitting my goal of 100 days is going to be rough. I think I’m going to consider my Pucon days as a handicap – but still shoot for 100 days during the Colorado season. However, if I travel out of Colorado during the season and board elsewhere, those days definitely go in the pool – no doubt.

To reinforce my goal, I created a category here called “100 Days in 06/07” where I will report my progress as I go.
