Getting Into Shape

October 30th, 2006

Healthy FoodIn three weeks, I’ll be getting on the bus headed to Winter Park. For the past three weeks, I’ve been frequenting the gym in an effort to get into decent physical shape for the trip. I went every day for the first week and several times a week until now. Each gym trip I’ll start with a run to build my endurance. I’ll follow with some stretches, crunches, and leg lifts to keep some steady attention on my core with every work out. Then I’ll focus weight training on one region – either my legs, my core, or my arms. I also did some mountain biking and rock climbing in there to mix things up a bit.

I’ve also made an effort to eat more ‘good’ food. I still eat a lot of crap, but not as much as I had been. I’ll eat a really heathly dinner right after the gym only to eat a p b & j later on that night. Since I’m more focused on being strong and having endurance, I don’t mind eating a few extra calories. I’d rather eat a little too much than not have enough calories for my muscles to grow.

All this working out isn’t as fun as it was at first. It’s taking more and more effort to get up and go to the gym. Hopefully, it will enable me to ride harder without getting as tired. I was particularly out of shape one trip, and I spent far too much time laying on my back in the snow, panting. While I’ve exercised before most of my trips, this is by far the most effort I’ve put into it. When I get tired on the treadmill, I just keep thinking about carving… or I look at the pretty girls in the gym ;)
A nice side effect is the fact that I do still seem to be loosing fat and gaining muscle mass… so I’m looking a bit different in the mirror.

How to Perform a Frontside 360

October 26th, 2006

Eugene SpinningIt read more like a backside 360 with a quick note about frontside at the end, but I found Eugene’s instructions to be very interesting. I could easily imagine each step and am more confident about trying something on this next trip.

1.) Begin taking off towards your intended hit/jump. Ride flat-based to pick up some speed…

October 26th, 2006

Winter Park Cam ShotOMG OMG OMG OMG!

DENVER, Colorado (AP) — A powerful snowstorm dumped 18 inches of snow in parts of the Colorado mountains and spread eastward Thursday, snarling traffic and shutting down dozens of school districts.

I could crap my pants! Attached is a webcam shot of the town of Winter Park. I’m so freak’n excited!

Oh, and I have more awesome news coming up very soon… I should be able to announce it by this weekend. Life is good!

Winter Park Turning White

October 20th, 2006

Winter Park SnowShuweeeet! I’ve been bummed at the lack of white on the Winter Park cams lately… Finally, today, we noticed the snow… f’n shuweeeet! I’ve been bouncing around the office since I found out! I’m stoked.

Must.. calm down.. must… do … work …

ACK! Check it out: OVERALL SITUATION TODAY – A low pressure system starts dropping in from the northwest with significant snowfall commencing today, and continuing through tonight. Significant snowfall is expected everywhere (that we cover), with today being the big snow day, not Saturday as moisture decreases some then. Isolated thunderstorms with some hail are expected today also.

Woo hoo! Oh yeah… those wooden structures in the picture. I don’t know what those are, but I’ve been watching them… they seem to be reproducing because it started off as just a few and now there are many. Hmmm….

Anyway… I gotta work. :(

Heavenly Gets Early Snow

October 15th, 2006

Heavenly Web Cam ShotWhile aggregating data for the new Snow Tripping website tonight, I ended up on Heavenly’s website. I was pleased to see in big bold letters, “Second Snow Storm in a Week!”

The news was posted about 5 days ago. You can check out the Heavenly Web cams for an up-to-date view. I must admit, I’m getting a little worried. I’m seeing all of these snow fall reports popping up and the Winter Park Web cams aren’t looking so white. I hope that changes between now and turkey day!

So, about that Snow Tripping site… I don’t think I’m going to have anything to post for a while. I’m not even sure if I’ll be able to reach my goals, but I’m enjoying the task of working on it.

New Movie – For Right or Wrong

October 14th, 2006

For Right or Wrong - a Burton Snowboariding MovieLooks as though our dear friend Burton is getting into the movie biz with For Right or Wrong. Being a web guy, I gotta talk about the website first. It’s sexy, the preview is awesome… but someone smack the designers in the back of the head for the text. I don’t know what size monitors they’re working with, but I’ve got a 21″ Dell LCD with DVI and I can barely freak’n read it! Because it’s flash, you can’t increase the font size. You can’t even copy and paste it into something else!!! Come on guys, stop being so geh (and I mean that in the bad way, not the other way)….

The movie looks to be very entertaining. The site has a nice preview and a variety of downloadable media. There’s also an upcoming tour that isn’t scheduled. Strangely enough, no Dallas dates! (lol)… Anyway, because some second rate designer (actually, the visual design on the site is stunning, it’s the practicality that’s broken) I hand typed all of the description text in human readable form, just for you:

Produced by Mandalay Entertainment, “For Right or Wrong” takes an inside look at what it’s like to snowboard for a living and combines action and documentary-style footage about riders’ lives both on and off the hill. The movie carves out individual story lines that focus on the different facets of pro snowboarding, including the urban snowboarding scene, the competitive snowboard lifestyle and a riding trip to Russia with competitive snowboard lifestyle and riding trip to Russian with Jake Burton, his oldest son George and select Burton team riders.

“When we set out to create ‘For Right or Wrong’ our vision was to show the variety in snowboarders’ personalities, their riding styles and the terrain they ride – all from an insider’s viewpoint,” says Jake Burton, Founder and Chairman of Burton Snowboards. “It’s a perspective on our sport that has never been seen before.”

Shaun White, Keir Dillon, Kelly Clark, Jake Burton Carpenter, George Carpenter, David Carrier-Porcheron, Terje Haakonsen, Dave Downing, Mads Jonsson, Jeremy Jones and Nicholas Miller all star in the movie, which was filmed in Japan, New Zealand, Italy, Norway, Russia, California, Utah, Oregon, Colorado, New Jersey, Vermont, Minnesota and Alaska.

So there it is, enjoy!

I happened across another link for the Coolzone Winterplex announcement last spring on the Dallas Biz Journal. Sure it’s old news, but I wanted to get an entry pointing to it.

Tis The Season – The Snow Is Here

October 13th, 2006

A dog in the snow..Wow, it’s not even November yet, and it’s already getting started. First of all, the news is buzzing about a heavy snowfall that hit the north east. This is actually kinda creepy as some places are reporting record snow falls for october. I’m one of those people who buys into the whole theory of us screwing up the planet’s weather patterns… Of course, I’m also one of those people who buys into the whole theory that mother nature will just get rid of us if we cause too much of a problem too..

Anyway, the race to open first is over, and Arapahoe Basin wins! Of course, they cheated and used man made snow – but hey, what do you expect? I guess this means the season has official started. Well, at least temperatures have cooled off here in Texas. While a select few people start carving early, I’ll try to fill my time with some mountain biking, rock climbing, or trips to the gym so I can be in shape by the time my trip gets here.

To all those who got the white powder early, enjoy!

Of Course You’re Being Sold – What did you think would happen?

October 12th, 2006

When Flickr sold to Yahoo, some users were concerned about the fate of their community. More recently, Google bought YouTube and now users are complaining:

Since it was the `people’ that made YouTube, why aren’t they being paid billions?

What did you think was going on? That some how people with lots of investment money just wanted to provide you with free bandwidth and tools to put your media online for fun?

Anyway, I got a huge laugh out of that quote… I said it before, so I’ll say it again… communities are big business.
